1 Raja-raja 10:16-17

10:16 King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; 600 measures ¹  of gold were used for each shield. 10:17 He also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold; three minas ²  of gold were used for each of these shields. The king placed them in the Palace of the Lebanon Forest. ³

12:4 “Your father made us work too hard. ⁴  Now if you lighten the demands he made and don’t make us work as hard, we will serve you.” ⁵

16:31 As if following in the sinful footsteps of Jeroboam son of Nebat were not bad enough, he married Jezebel the daughter of King Ethbaal of the Sidonians. Then he worshiped and bowed to Baal. ⁶

18:32 With the stones he constructed an altar for the Lord. ⁷  Around the altar he made a trench large enough to contain two seahs ⁸  of seed.

[10:16]  ¹ tn The Hebrew text has simply “six hundred,” with no unit of measure given.

[10:17]  ² sn Three minas. The mina was a unit of measure for weight.

[10:17]  ³ sn The Palace of the Lebanon Forest. This name was appropriate because of the large amount of cedar, undoubtedly brought from Lebanon, used in its construction. The cedar pillars in the palace must have given it the appearance of a forest.

[12:4]  ⁴ tn Heb “made our yoke burdensome.”

[12:4]  ⁵ tn Heb “but you, now, lighten the burdensome work of your father and the heavy yoke which he placed on us, and we will serve you.” In the Hebrew text the prefixed verbal form with vav (וְנַעַבְדֶךָ, [vÿna’avdekha] “and we will serve you”) following the imperative (הָקֵל [haqel], “lighten”) indicates purpose (or result). The conditional sentence used in the translation above is an attempt to bring out the logical relationship between these forms.

[16:31]  ⁶ tn Heb “and he went and served Baal and bowed down to him.”

[16:31]  sn The Canaanites worshiped Baal as a storm and fertility god.

[18:32]  ⁷ tn Heb “and he built the stones into an altar in the name of the Lord.”

[18:32]  ⁸ tn A seah was a dry measure equivalent to about seven quarts.
